The birth of copyright
Beginning in France in 1791, in the post-war period after the French revolution, the first actions towards creating copyright were taken to make sure that authors were paid for the use of their work. In 1849 the first organization dedicated to protect music rights, SACEM, was founded in France – and other countries soon followed suit.
In 1886, the Bern Convention was formed which provided creators such as authors, musicians, poets and painters the right to control how their works were being used, by whom, and on what terms. It was also made sure that domestic copyright laws were being followed internationally as well.
Copyright works more or less the same all over the world (where it’s part of the law) with slight differences. In Europe, copyright laws are formulated in a way where the author’s artistic integrity is put first whilst the Anglo-American view sees copyright more as a commodity, prioritizing the possibility of distributing a work to the public.
